Mark Cuban was recently featured in an Inc. Magazine YouTube video sharing what he knows about safeguarding your online reputation in Social Media. This caught my eye in part because our company, PilmerPR, is in the Public Relations and Online Reputation Management business. It also caught my eye because of my work this past decade launching around four dozen entrepreneurial startups and helping some, like Mozy, AdvancedMD, and Seastone land in the Inc. 500.
Those issues aside, my 5,000 social media contacts and my many social media accounts are attracted to me for a reason. Mark Cuban suggests the wise manager of their online profile pays attention to how employers, potential clients, partners, or the police may view our online breadcrumb trail in the near future. His view may have overtones of big brother is listening as portrayed in the movie Minority Report where Tom Cruise buzzes about busting criminals before they can actually commit crime because intent can be proven. Or, for the older audience it may appear a bit Orwellian.
Cuban is no doubt directing his remarks to potential users of his new online products he is launching. See www.CyberDust.com We have to remember he is the master shark investor, serial entrepreneur of Shark Tank fame. Given that, 77 percent of employers now search your social profile prior to hiring you, double the number of just six years ago. Cuban is not just blowing marketing smoke.
On weekends, I teach an entrepreneurship class at Utah Valley University (UVU). Some professors, including me, were startled the first time they realized disgruntled students can anonymously attack professors through online rating services.
Online Reputation Management is vital in most professional career development. I think us all wise to think of our cyber future and how we are writing the history of us now.
