UVEF Top 25 Utah Startups Announced – Entrepreneurs in #1 State for Business

When was asked to serve as Communications* Chair on the board for the Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum (UVEF) in 2005, I had no idea the cool ride I was in for, learning from dynamic start-up entrepreneurs and mentors from across the state. Today, I attended my 8th UVEF Top 25 Under 5 awards. Interesting  to note, when UVEF started its Top 25 Under 5 awards program 13 years ago, you likely had never heard of the following associated with or leveraged by the 2012 winners:

  • YouTube (started 2005)
  • Twitter (started 2006)
  • Facebook (2003)
  • iPod, iPhone, iPad
  • Domain broker
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Conversion Rate Optimization

Google was a small 1 yr old startup and Eric Schmidt was still the CEO at my old employer, Novell. How things change. This year’s crop of UVEF Top 25 Under 5 Winners represent new technology and innovative approaches to old problems.

UVEF today recognized Campus Book Rentals, an innovative online textbook rental company currently serving more than 5,800 campuses, as the number one performer among nominees. Today’s Top 25 have collectively created more than 600 jobs and $135 million in revenue.

“We had a record number of terrific award applicants to consider for this year’s Top 25 Under 5,” said UVEF 2012 chairman Matt Bowman. “The 2012 crop of UVEF top performers continues to showcase Utah’s leadership among states emerging from a tough economy.”

Amy Rees Anderson, CEO of MediConnect Global, emceed this year’s event.  Anderson has founded and led several successful healthcare technology ventures, including MediConnect Global, a leader in medical record retrieval and management that was acquired earlier this year by Verisk Analytics for $377 million.

This year’s other award recipients are Arellia, BambooHR, BizVision, BlueRoof360, DomainMarket.com, DrivingSales, GOAL ZERO, KT TAPE, Launch Leads, Leadgenix, Oozle Media, Orabrush, PcCareSupport, Persnickety Clothing Company, PRMarketing.com, Professional Cable, RawData, Scalar Analytics, SEO.com, Simplicity Laser, The Ready Project, Undercover Mama, V3 Systems, and  XOLogic.

2012 is UVEF’s thirteenth Top 25 Under Five competition. UVEF has highlighted more than 300 companies through this competition, including Utah success stories like Orange Soda, Omniture, Skullcandy and Xango, among many others.
