…And the judges say Underwater Audio is #1 among the Utah Student 25 entrepreneurs for 2013. What Captain Nemo of Jules Verne’s 20k Leagues Under the Sea would have given for one of these? More recently, I wonder how Michael Phelps would look jammin’ with this in the pool?
Underwater Audio takes iPod Shuffles from Apple and waterproofs them using a unique, proprietary process. Swimmers love how Underwater Audio’s waterproof iPod makes those boring laps fly by! In less than two years, Underwater Audio has grown from 1 to 41 employees. Underwater Audio’s founders remain committed to producing high-quality products. They plan to develop new swimming accessories to keep meeting users’ needs.
The rest of the Utah Student 25 winners aren’t far behind in the coolness factor. Each winner represents a “going concern.” Each is a profitable company rockin’ the entrepreneur house while it’s founders are still in college. WOW! Where do these students get the time to make the grade in school while making the grade in corporate America?
Since I served in behalf of PilmerPR on the 2009 advisory board that launched Utah Student 25 in 2009, we’ve seen nothing short of amazing growth among America’s entrepreneurs. The college fever for sizzling start-ups is no less hot. Did I mention HOT!? This fever follows, not surprisingly, on the heels of the economic downturn in 2008. As the following chart shows, Internet traffic on the term “entrepreneur” rose dramatically in 2009 and that increase continues today.
My hope for this very important celebration of student startups is that more Utah universities and colleges throw their weight behind Utah Student 25. Great business leaders know the value of synergy and Utah’s collective academic business community can empower more students as we band together. Among the 2013 top 25 the following schools were represented: BYU-15, UVU-5, USU-1, Weber-1, Westminster-1, Utah-1.
