Of these, 1,800 participants were prescribed statins by their physicians. The rest were not. "The main message is that a high dose of statin medication doesn't appear to lower the risk of any given cardiovascular event in both men and women," Nachman says. "Doctors prescribe statins to individuals with known cardiovascular disease because of the benefits it can confer, but for the vast majority of people, benefits statin medications far outweigh the risks," Nachman adds. "I suggest that clinicians educate their patients on both the benefits and risks."
